Thorp Perrow Arboretum Dalesend Cottages

Moody misty Autumns are still heaven here.

Home alone – on the sofa with Strictly Come Dancing, a mess of Great Danes and Miniature Dachshunds.

Why would you lie on a floor when a sofa is available?

Our favourite season, Autumn has settled over Yorkshire. Green pastures are punctuated by harvested yellow and gold corn fields sewing a visual patchwork across huge horizons.   We lit our first fire in the house last weekend, settled on the sofa amongst the mess of Great Danes and miniature Dachshunds.  Yes, we know, we are ridiculous about our choice of dog breeds.  Then we watched Strictly Come Dancing.

We admitted to each  other, that the arrival of Autumn, and now ‘Strictly’ on tv again, (not to mention the Great British Bake Off)  meant we were suppressing a bit of that ‘Autumn back to school feeling’.  Yet we have no school age children at home.

Have you met Brutus? He’s 3 years old this September and weighs over 65 kilos. He’s a teenager and needs a lot of sleep.

It’s Autumn and  we’re very much reminded of being a couple ‘ home- alone’  now our youngest child has been head hunted to his second job and moved out to live closer to his new work location. As we rattle around in a house that is built to house more people and life than the two of us, we realise we needed a prescription for what we can do together.  Now we were just two, like you, our Dalesend Cottages guests.

The prescription.

We decided that Dalesend Cottages guests have so much fun exploring Yorkshire that we would ‘reinvent ourselves’ as a tourist couple.  Sometimes we feel a tad envious when you tell us on your departure day, about your explorations. So, we’ve set ‘dates’ for ourselves, to get out and enjoy some of the more unusual and of course, amusing places or events in Yorkshire  over the coming months.

An ‘small’ English Dog at home

And as we’ve already lit our first fire in the house,  we invite you to come and enjoy one of our Dalesend Cottage log burners – with our complimentary log supply. Browse our cottage selection and discover your personal favourite.

Look out your wellies and coats, pack cosy jerseys, beanie hats, and get set for a weekend outdoors in Yorkshire.

We love sheep but we don’t follow them. Read our suggestions for your stay in Yorkshire this Autumn

Our ‘date’ days out.

Harlow Carr Autumn Wildlife Sculpture Trail, near Harrogate. There is a lot to see here. Pop into  Betty’s for tea here – they have one onsite. Yay! Later you can indulge in retail therapy. Harrogate is renounced for smart exclusive boutiques and great high street names.

Stroll around the Thorp Perrow Arboretum – This really is a MUST-SEE during Autumn for the riot of leaf colour.  We offer reduced entry price for  Dalesend Cottage guests. Pre-Christmas is great fun here too with  Santa’s grotto – for grown ups and children.

Book a Halloween  Dinner at Bolton Castle.  27th October 2017. If you stay with us closer to Christmas, book onto their Christmas dining evening. This castle couldn’t feel more authentic and creepy. For one night only..we would be terrified to be there longer.

We will be browsing amongst the unusual brocante wares at Masham Town Hall on Sunday 28th October.  And,  we usually try and visit the car boot sales on Saturdays at Bedale (until the 21st October). For vintage finds, this car boot sale is one of the best in our area.  Pair of Chinese vases? Vintage Rolex? We dream..

We’ll be exploring the Himalayan Gardens from 14th October – 5th November. You really must visit, click on the weblink to see why! With rare plants and sculptures, these gardens are off the beaten track, and only open twice a year. We say,go during  their three week opening slot this Autumn for a fabulous day out.

There are some great Autumn Sales and events at Tennants Auction House, Read more on the weblink, and they have places to eat. You can make it a  whole day out if you combine it with a visit to Leybyurn town and do the Shawl walk. Why don’t you take home something quirky and ancient, to remind you of your Yorkshire stay? Look out for their specialist collector sales.

It wouldn’t be Autumn in Yorkshire if we didn’t go to Masham Sheep Fair on 30 September and 1st October 2017.  We always go to see those gorgeous woolly sheep.  There will be crafts and events and Masham is only 6 miles from us. The town is also home to those famous breweries: Black Sheep and Theakstons. Oh dear..what’s not to love about Masham?

There is a a fabulous bonfire party at Bedale Park next to the town hall on November 4th.

We are debating whether we might have a Dalesend Cottage bonfire in the park on the same date. We better stop debating and start building the bonfire. Keep an eye on our website for future announcements.
